San Pedro High School Girls Volleyball - ‘The Determination’

March 4th, 2010 by napa high

Friday, November 18, 2005 marked another great moment in the annals of San Pedro High School sports as the girls volleyball team was able to cap off a thrilling season in the City Section Girls Volleyball championship match against a worthy challenger in Taft of Woodland Hills at Occidental College in Eagle Rock. In Game Four, the Toreadors were only down 20-19, as they made a bid for a comeback after avoiding a sweep by winning Game 3. That’s when three kills by Natalie Benitez and a critical block by eventual City Section Player Of The Year Samantha Taylor set up a frantic rally for match point. An error by Taft allowed the Pirates to celebrate and exhale, repeating as City champions with a four-game win, the only time the 2005 San Pedro girls volleyball team didn’t sweep a City Section opponent. Including regular season tournaments, the Pirates finished 35-4 overall, of the most dominant seasons ever for San Pedro, regardless of the sport.
