its b/c he plays a right handed guitar and turns it upside down, which is why he gets that unique sound, so whenever you hear just the strumming you can pretty much tell its an ataris song.

Actually he’s right handed, he just flips the guitar over because that’s the way he learned how to play it (thickest string at the bottom). As for the chords, it looks like he’s leaving the high E and B strings open while playing the top bits of the chords and/or power chords.
That’s my best guess anyway.
