San Pedro High School Football – ‘The Drive’

July 27th, 2010 by napa high

Saturday, December 13, 2008 will forever be known as the greatest finish in San Pedro High School football’s 100-year plus history. Down 21-14 to rival Narbonne of Harbor City with only 27 seconds left and no timeouts, Barry Heads had to find a way to lead the Pirates down the field of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. A 55-yard drive was needed, and Heads delivered. He completed three passes for 40 yards and spiked the ball twice to set up the deciding play with one second remaining. Heads would roll to his left and find Benny Weischedel in the back corner of the end zone between two Narbonne defenders as the clock expired, setting off a wild celebration from the 10000-plus San Pedro faithful. Finally, Donald Jarrin’s extra point made it official… San Pedro High football was the 2008 City Section champions, eh, co-champions with their hated nemesis as the City Section football championship game ended in a 21-21 tie due to the City rules not permitting overtime. Yet, many still feel like it truly was a victory for the Pirates, and both teams’ mixed reaction after it was all over made it as such. A true ‘So Proud To Be A Pirate’ moment indeed.
